On National Sports Day, Tata Steel Foundation (TSF) highlights its commitment to transforming lives through sport by celebrating the remarkable journeys of young athletes nurtured under its grassroots and youth development programmes.

For decades, TSF has positioned sports as a powerful tool of empowerment, engaging more than 44,000 children and youth through 129 grassroots and youth development centres across Jharkhand, Odisha, and other regions. These centres provide structured coaching, holistic development, and a pathway to national and international competitions in disciplines ranging from football, hockey, and archery to athletics, kabaddi, and weightlifting.
Among the inspiring stories showcased was Simon Bodra, who started playing hockey with bamboo sticks in Bandgaon and, through TSF’s guidance, rose to join the Naval Tata Hockey Academy and represent Jharkhand at national tournaments.

Priya Mahali, an archer from Jamshedpur, began training at age eight through TSF’s ISWP centre. From modest beginnings, she has become a national champion, winning gold at the U-19 NTPC Junior Nationals in 2025 and now dreams of Olympic glory.
Equally moving is the journey of Deepak Kumar Pandey, whose association with TSF began in 2006. From weightlifting and kabaddi championships to a career in the paramilitary forces and now as a teacher and mentor, his story illustrates how sports build character and create pathways for lifelong growth.
The Foundation also celebrated the rise of Rahul Karmkar, a 14-year-old archer from Seraikela. Discovered at a TSF summer camp, Rahul rapidly progressed to become a national-level archer, securing gold at the 2024 SGFI School Nationals, and continues to train rigorously while excelling academically.
These journeys reflect TSF’s broader mission: to catch talent young, provide equal opportunities, and nurture excellence. By combining coaching, infrastructure, nutrition, and mentorship, the Foundation ensures that children from some of the most remote and underprivileged communities can aspire to professional sporting careers.
On this National Sports Day, TSF reaffirms that sports are not just about medals, but about shaping resilient individuals, empowering communities, and inspiring a stronger nation.
