JAMSHEDPUR।
Dev Krishna Suman’s journey is a compelling story of determination, resilience, and steady ambition—one that reflects not just personal success, but the transformative power of skill-based education.
Hailing from Gosaidih village in Bundu block of Ranchi district, Jharkhand, Dev Krishna Suman aged 23 grew up as the only son in a modest middle-class family. His father, Budheshwar Gorai, worked as a private school teacher while also managing farming, and his mother, Sobha Devi, supported the household through stitching work. Despite financial constraints, the family remained deeply committed to education. His father, who also taught at Saraswati Shishu Vidya Mandir in Bundu where Dev studied, would continue guiding him at home even after long working hours—instilling discipline, perseverance, and a strong work ethic from an early age.
Dev’s dedication was evident early on. In 2018, he secured a position among the top 10 rank holders in the Jharkhand Board examinations. However, continuing education required financial support. While studying at St. Xavier Inter College, Bundu, he began teaching students from nearby areas, managing two batches of around 30 learners. This not only helped him sustain his studies but also built confidence and independence.
In 2020, guided by his father, Dev enrolled in the Turner trade (Batch 2020–22) at ITI Tamar, an institute established in 2012 by Tata Steel Foundation in collaboration with the Jharkhand Government with a vision to uplift rural youth through skill development for gainful employment. ITI Tamar offers NCVT-approved one- and two-year full-time courses in trades such as Fitter, Electrician, Turner, and Welder. To date, the institute has trained 979 trainees, with approximately 84% belonging to SC, ST, and OBC categories, and has achieved an impressive placement rate of around 96%, with 945 trainees successfully placed.
Dev’s training journey was not without challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted learning soon after he enrolled, but he adapted by attending online classes and later relocating closer to the institute to continue his education when offline sessions resumed. His consistency, discipline, and full attendance soon paid off when he secured campus placement with CTC India, marking his entry into the professional world.
After gaining initial work experience in Gamharia, Dev pursued an apprenticeship at RKFL, Jamshedpur. What followed was a transformative phase. Over two years (2023–2025), he established himself as one of the finest CNC programmers. Driven by a hunger to learn, he went beyond his assigned responsibilities and mastered a wide range of machine operations, including turning, cylindrical grinding, ID grinding, VTL, VMC, profile grinding, and honing.
Reflecting on this phase, Dev shared, “I realized that if I wanted to move ahead, I had to do more than just my daily work. So, I made it a habit to keep learning—about programming, machines, and how things function in real industrial settings. Even after long shifts, I would spend time upgrading myself. That consistency made a big difference over time.”

By 2025, his persistence earned him a promotion to the role of programmer. Soon after, a life-changing opportunity arrived—an interview call for a position in Hong Kong. The interview, conducted online from TSTI, Burmamines, was highly competitive, with only one position available and Dev cleared it.
In 2026, he secured a prestigious international placement with VSC Construction Steel Solutions Ltd., Hong Kong, with a monthly salary of approximately ₹2.08 lakh, along with fully supported travel and accommodation. This achievement marked a turning point—not only financially but emotionally for his entire family.
His father Budheshwar Gorai reflected with pride, “He has always been sincere towards his studies, and I have seen how patiently he has worked through every phase of his journey. There were challenges, but he stayed focused and never lost direction. Joining ITI Tamar played an important role in shaping his path. Hong Kong is something we had never thought of but seeing him reach there today fills us with pride and a sense of fulfilment”, he says.
Dev’s success also holds special significance for ITI Tamar and Tata Steel Foundation. He is now the 38th trainee from the institute to secure placement with the same company in Hong Kong, reflecting the strong trust and credibility built with industry partners over the years. The institute had earlier achieved its first overseas milestone when three trainees were placed with the same company, and has since expanded its global footprint, including placements in the UAE with Balmer & Lawrie.
Vishal Anand, Principal, ITI Tamar, noted, “Dev’s journey reflects what consistent effort and the right guidance can achieve. He was disciplined, regular, and always willing to learn beyond the classroom. His success strengthens the confidence that industry partners have in our trainees. Each such achievement opens doors for many more young people who come with similar aspirations.”
At a broader level, Tata Steel Foundation sees such journeys as part of a larger transformation.
Captain Amitabh, Head – Skill Development, Tata Steel Foundation, stated, “Our focus has always been on enabling youth to access meaningful opportunities through skill development. Dev’s journey reflects how the right ecosystem, combined with individual determination, can create impactful outcomes. When young people from smaller towns step into global roles, it inspires others to believe that such opportunities are within reach—and that is where real change begins.”
As Dev prepares to begin his new chapter in Hong Kong, his journey stands as a powerful reminder: extraordinary success is often built on ordinary days of consistent effort. From a small village in Jharkhand to an international career, his story embodies self-belief, perseverance, and the life-changing impact of skill-based education.
