April 14 is observed as National Fire Service Day in India. The observance traces its origins back to the Bombay Dock explosion in 1944, where 66 firefighters lost their lives while battling a massive fire. Their sacrifice serves as a profound reminder of the risks they face and the importance of preparedness.
D B Sundara Ramam, Vice President, Corporate Services, commended the bravery of firefighters for their efforts in protecting the community from life-threatening situations. He recognised Tata Steel Fire Services for their efficient handling of fire incidents and highlighted advanced firefighting resources, such as the SKYLIFT Fire Tender and Crash Fire Tender.
He emphasised the importance of conducting regular fire audits on shop floors and urged the Fire & Rescue team to actively promote fire safety during the Fire Service Week.
Satish Singh, General Secretary, TWU, praised the commitment of Fire Service personnel and highlighted Tata Steel’s initiative to include female firefighters, marking a significant step toward gender diversity in the sector.
The Chief Guest and the Guest of Honour inaugurated the ‘Fire & Rescue Exhibition’ at the West Plant Fire Station and flagged off a firefighting vehicle to spread awareness.
