
Deoghar (Jharkhand), July 29: A major road accident occurred early Tuesday morning in Jharkhand’s Deoghar district when a bus carrying Kanwariyas (devotees of Lord Shiva) collided head-on with an LPG cylinder-loaded truck near Jamuniya Chowk in Mohanpur block. The accident led to the death of 5 pilgrims on the spot, while more than a dozen others sustained serious injuries.

Devotees Were Headed Towards Basukinath Temple
According to initial reports, the bus was carrying Kanwariyas who had performed Jalabhishek at Baba Baidyanath Dham and were en route to Basukinath Temple in Dumka. The crash occurred around Jamuniya, where the bus reportedly rammed into an oncoming truck loaded with LPG cylinders. The impact was so severe that the bus was completely crushed, while the front of the truck was also heavily damaged.

Driver Dozed Off, Says Preliminary Report
Eyewitnesses and police officials believe the driver of the bus dozed off, causing the vehicle to lose control and crash. Among the deceased is the bus driver, identified as Subhash Duri, a resident of the Mohanpur police station area in Deoghar.
Rescue Operation by Police and NDRF
Following the accident, teams from the local police and NDRF rushed to the scene and launched a rescue operation. The injured were immediately taken to Deoghar Sadar Hospital for treatment. Several pilgrims remain in critical condition.
Chief Minister Hemant Soren Expresses Condolence
Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren expressed sorrow over the tragic incident. He posted on X (formerly Twitter):
“This morning’s news of a bus accident near Jamuniya Chowk in Mohanpur block, Deoghar, is extremely saddening. District administration is carrying out rescue operations and providing medical assistance to the injured. May Baba Baidyanath grant peace to the souls of the deceased and strength to their bereaved families.”

MP Nishikant Dubey Claims 18 Deaths
Goda MP Dr. Nishikant Dubey also shared details of the accident on X, claiming that 18 devotees have lost their lives in the crash. His post reads:
“In my Lok Sabha constituency, Deoghar, 18 devotees died during the Kanwar Yatra after a tragic bus-truck collision. May Baba Baidyanath give strength to the grieving families to bear this pain.”
However, official sources have so far confirmed 5 deaths only, and the number cited by the MP has not yet been officially verified.
