The Department of Pain Medicine at Central Hospital, South Eastern Railway, in joint collaboration with the West Bengal Society for the Study of Pain (WBSSP) and the Indian Society for Study of Pain (ISSP) launched a week-long mega public health and awareness campaign from July 1 to July 9, 2026.
The initiative marks the 42nd ISSP Foundation Day which was organized under the theme “Relieving Pain, Restoring Life” to address the growing challenges of chronic pain management. The week-long campaign was culminated in a grand foundational event on July 9, 2026, at Garden Reach, Kolkata.
Bringing Expert Care to the Public
Driven by the motto, “Suffering from Chronic Pain? – Visit a Pain Physician,” the intensive campaign aims to bridge the gap between specialized medical expertise and the public. To maximize reach, Pain camps and free medical consultations are being actively conducted across major railway and metro transit hubs, including:
- South Eastern Railway: Santragachi and Kharagpur stations.
- Metro Railway Kolkata: Park street and Tollygunge metro stations.
- Eastern Railway: Sealdah and Howrah stations
Focus on Non-Surgical Interventions
The campaign was a vital spotlight on Minimally Invasive Pain and Spine Interventions (MIPSI). Medical officials emphasize that for common chronic conditions—such as low back pain, sciatica, neck pain, and knee pain—major surgery is not always the only answer. When standard conservative therapies fail, MIPSI offers highly effective, targeted alternatives that avoid major surgical risks and drastically improve patient quality of life.

Advancing Medical Education in Eastern India
Originally founded on July 9, 1984, in Varanasi, the ISSP has guided Pain Medicine into becoming a recognized super-speciality discipline in India. A major highlight of the campaign is celebrating the success of the institutional training collaboration with Indian Railways. This partnership established the FNB Pain Medicine programme at South Eastern Railway Central Hospital in 2023, expanding further to Jag Jivan Ram Railway Hospital in 2024 to train the next generation of specialized pain physicians.
