JAMSHEDPUR .

Tata Steel was the first company in India to establish a workplace crèche and continues to lead with one of the most extensive childcare ecosystems in corporate India. The Company today operates over 20 crèches across its plants, mining locations, offices, and townships — spanning sites such as Jamshedpur, Kolkata, West Bokaro, Noamundi, Joda, Kharagpur, Tarapur, Haldia, Bamnipal, Jajpur, and Meramandali.
Across these facilities, hundreds of children are enrolled at any given time. The Muskaan crèche in Jamshedpur operates at near-full capacity, while units in Noamundi, Joda, and other locations report steady utilisation. Even smaller sites like Tarapur and CRM Bara maintain active crèches to ensure that working parents have access to reliable childcare support across all locations.
Each centre is designed in line with Tata Steel’s Crèche Policy, offering child-friendly infrastructure, CCTV monitoring, medical care, nutritious meals, and structured learning activities. Staffing follows a defined ratio — one helper for every five children under three years and one for every eight children aged three to six — supported by trained supervisors and attendants to maintain high-quality care. The crèches are also tied up with local hospitals to handle any medical exigency, ensuring a safe and responsive environment for children.
The initiative is inclusive, extending benefits to all employees, regardless of gender or marital status, for children aged six months to six years. Tata Steel reimburses crèche expenses to employees, in addition to offering on-site and near-site facilities, nursing breaks, and flexible access as part of its comprehensive childcare support system.
Importantly, these crèches support women employees working across all three shifts. While some centres have already begun operating in three shifts, others are fully equipped to extend similar support, reinforcing the company’s commitment to enabling women’s participation in every sphere of work.
Going beyond basic care, some facilities — particularly Muskaan at Tata Steel Jamshedpur — focus on the overall development of children through activities like tuitions, art, dance, and creative learning.
By providing dependable and inclusive childcare, Tata Steel continues to strengthen women’s participation in the workforce and promote a balanced, progressive, and equitable workplace across all its operational sites.
