Tata Steel hosts a Grand Farewell for Ms. Bachendri Pal

Jamshedpur।: Ms. Bachendri Pal, an adobe of inspiration, courage and strong will, conquered the Mt. Everest, 35 years back, on May 23, 1984 and since then has been actively involved in training the youth of India in adventure sports as the Chief of Adventure Programmes at Tata Steel and Director of Tata Steel Adventure Foundation. After more than three and a half decades of this amazing association, Ms. Pal will be retiring at the end of May 2019. To celebrate her legendary life journey and inspiring achievements and to honour her contribution to the Indian sporting fraternity, Tata Steel, today, organised “No Mountain Too High” titled event at Jamshedpur.

Mr. Anand Sen, President, TQM & Steel Business, Tata Steel, said, “It has been an honour for Tata Steel to be associated with a legend such as Ms. Pal. Over the last three and a half decades, Tata Steel Adventure Foundation has emerged as a crystalized version of her vision of promoting adventure sports and more importantly using it as a powerful and very effective vehicle in creating a whole generation of leaders.  We wish her well, long and healthy life.”

Sports has always been one of the core principles of Tata Steel’s philosophy with the Company using the medium as a tool to build and connect with communities and encourage a healthy lifestyle. Tata Steel has always focused on nurturing budding sporting talent and has established numerous training centers, scouting platforms, and academies across India for helping sportspersons and the aspiring youth.

The Tata Steel Adventure Foundation was born out of the same vision in 1984 and has been helping people from all walks of life in charting out their own paths to self-discovery. Ms. Bachendri Pal has been pioneering and leading the organisation since its inception and has groomed numerous adventurists and mountaineers.

An interactive and inspirational panel discussion session with the legendary Ms. Bachendri Pal and 10 Everesters trained by her, was organised at the SNTI Auditorium in Jamshedpur. During the event, Ms. Pal was felicitated for her extensive contribution and efforts towards adventure sports and mountaineering. The Ten Everesters who were mentored and trained by Ms. Pal were also felicitated during the evening function. The ten Everesters include R S Pal, Poonam Rana, Binita Soren, Arunima Sinha, Meghlal Mahato, Premlata Agrawal, Susen Mahato, Sandeep Toliya, Swarnalata Dalai and Hemant Gupta.

On the occasion, two books – one on her achievements and another on Mission Gange (which Ms. Pal led last year in 2018) were also unveiled.

The day (May 23, 2019) marks the 35th anniversary of Ms Pal reaching the Mount Everest in 1984.

Ms Pal, Chief of Adventure Programmes at Tata Steel and also the Director of the Tata Steel Adventure Foundation, is retiring from the services of the Company at the end of this month.

Ms. Pal, in 1984, became the first Indian woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest. She has recently been bestowed with the third highest civilian award Padma Bhushan by the Government of India. Ms Pal is also a recipient the Padma Shri in 1984 and the Arjuna Award in 1986.

Notably, on her return from scaling the Everest, the Tata Youth Adventure Centre was founded by her as a guide. The centre was the precursor to TSAF (Tata Steel Adventure Foundation). Ms Pal has been working with Tata Steel since 1983.

A special interactive session with the legendary mountaineer will be held specifically for Tata Steel employees on May 24, 2019.
