Ranchi: The Jharkhand High Court has accepted a criminal appeal filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) seeking to increase the sentences of three accused, including former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, in the infamous fodder scam case. The appeal pertains to the fraudulent withdrawal of ₹89 lakh from Deoghar, a key part of the scam, where six individuals were convicted. Out of these six, three have since passed away.
The bench, comprising Justice Rangan Mukhopadhyay and Justice Ambuj Nath, heard the arguments presented by the CBI and agreed to the plea for enhancing the punishment. The court’s decision is seen as a firm step towards holding public officials accountable for corruption and financial irregularities.
The fodder scam, one of India’s largest corruption scandals, involved the embezzlement of government funds meant for animal husbandry and cattle feed. Lalu Prasad Yadav, along with several other politicians and officials, faced prosecution and convictions related to this case. The ₹89 lakh fake withdrawal from Deoghar was one of the critical instances of illegal financial activities under investigation.
Initially, six accused were found guilty and sentenced. However, the CBI moved the Jharkhand High Court, urging it to impose harsher penalties on the convicts to send a strong message against corruption. The deaths of three accused did not deter the agency from seeking justice by pursuing stronger sentences for the remaining convicts.
The High Court’s acceptance of the CBI’s appeal is widely regarded as a positive development in India’s ongoing fight against corruption. Anti-corruption activists and the public have welcomed the decision, hoping it will deter others from misusing public funds.
This judgment reinforces the principle that the law applies equally to all, regardless of their political stature or influence, and that attempts to dilute punishment for serious offenses like corruption will not be tolerated.
With this move, the judiciary has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring strict accountability and delivering justice in high-profile corruption cases.
