Imphal: The Khuman Lampak Main Stadium has hosted its share of dramatic afternoons this Durand Cup, but few visitors arrived quite like the one who trotted out on Sunday with her nose to the grass and a fully loaded sense of purpose. She was a German Shepherd, part of the Indian Army’s K9 Warriors, and for the next several minutes she and her fellow Military Working Dogs turned a football stadium into something closer to a live operations briefing — minus the football, plus considerably more tail-wagging.
The demonstration ran through three of the Army’s core canine disciplines: Explosive Detection, Tracking and Assault. It made for compelling viewing, not because of any theatrics, but because of how ordinary the extraordinary looked in practice. A dog locating a hidden object with a single pass of its snout. A handler issuing a command so subtle that most of the crowd would have missed the signal. A partnership so well drilled that neither party seemed to be performing at all.
That, in essence, is the whole point of these units. What spectators watched unfold was less a show and more a glimpse into a working relationship built over years, refined through repetition, and trusted with genuine operational stakes. The dogs responded to commands, picked up scent trails, identified simulated threats, and moved through the sort of scenarios that mirror what these teams actually encounter in the field. None of it looked rushed. All of it looked earned.
Behind each of the three disciplines lies a distinct and demanding job. Explosive Detection Dogs are trained to pick out explosives and hazardous material using a sense of smell so refined it borders on the improbable, work that quietly underpins force protection and security operations across the country. Tracker Dogs follow human scent over distance and time, called upon to locate suspects or find the missing when human search efforts alone would fall short. Assault Dogs, meanwhile, are trained for a very different tempo altogether, supporting troops directly in specialised combat and counter-terrorism situations where speed and courage matter as much as training.
The range does not end there. Depending on where they are deployed, Military Working Dogs also take on mine detection, guard duties, infantry patrol work, search and rescue, and even avalanche rescue in the mountains. It is a job description that would exhaust most animals, made possible by a combination of physical endurance, scenting ability few machines can rival, and a temperament suited to genuinely difficult terrain.
None of this happens by instinct alone. Every dog and handler pairing passes through the Remount Veterinary Corps Centre and College in Meerut, where training is built around obedience, confidence, scenting skill and physical conditioning, run alongside the slower, less measurable work of building trust between animal and handler. It is this bond, more than any single skill, that determines whether a team succeeds when it matters.
The breeds chosen for the role tell their own story. German Shepherds, Labrador Retrievers and Belgian Malinois remain the backbone of the programme, selected for intelligence, stamina and scenting power proven across decades of service. More recently, the Army has begun looking closer to home, exploring indigenous breeds such as the Mudhol Hound and Chippiparai, both well suited by temperament and constitution to Indian conditions and increasingly finding a place within the ranks.
In Manipur specifically, these teams are not simply demonstrating skills for a crowd; they are actively deployed, supporting troops through explosive detection, tracking, area security and other operational tasks in a genuinely demanding environment. The exhibition at Khuman Lampak was, in that sense, a rare public window into work that usually happens far from any audience at all.
By the time the demonstration wound down, the applause carried a different note to the cheers reserved for goals and near-misses earlier in the tournament. It was the sound of a crowd recognising something rarer than skill for its own sake: quiet discipline, absolute trust, and a partnership that asks everything of both species involved and somehow delivers it every time. Long after the football is done and the stadium empties out, these teams will still be out there, doing the same work without an audience, without applause, and without needing either.
