A major encounter between the police and criminals in the jungle area behind the Surya Mandir (under the Sidhgora police station limits) early Tuesday morning has sent shockwaves across Jamshedpur. A notorious criminal, who was arrested earlier, attempted to escape by snatching a police officer’s pistol and opening fire. In self-defense, the police retaliated, shooting the criminal in the leg. Both the injured criminal and a slightly wounded Sub-Inspector have been admitted to MGM Hospital under strict security.
The Chain Snatching Incident and Police Chase
The sequence of events began late Monday evening when a woman’s gold chain was snatched in the city. The police immediately swung into action and launched a massive manhunt. Acting on a tip-off that the suspects were fleeing on a Pulsar motorcycle, the police team chased them near Surya Mandir in Sidhgora. The criminals lost their balance, fell from the bike, and opened fire at the police while attempting to flee toward the JAP-6 campus. However, the police promptly cordoned off the area and successfully arrested both suspects after a brief struggle.
Weapons Recovered and Jungle Search Operation
During strict interrogation, the police recovered illegal weapons and live cartridges based on the information provided by the suspects. The criminals confessed to multiple chain-snatching incidents across the city and revealed that the looted gold jewelry was hidden in the jungle yard behind the Surya Mandir.
Pistol Snatched and Retaliatory Firing
Acting on this crucial lead, a police team took the criminals to the jungle around 3:00 AM on Tuesday to recover the stolen jewelry. Suddenly, one of the criminals seized the opportunity, snatched a police officer’s pistol, and started firing at the team in a desperate bid to escape.
To stop the fleeing criminal and in self-defense, the police immediately retaliated. The criminal was shot in the leg and collapsed. During this sudden scuffle and retaliation, a Sub-Inspector also sustained minor injuries.

Treatment at MGM Hospital and Ongoing Investigation
Senior police officials rushed to the spot immediately after the encounter. Several empty shells and a pistol were recovered from the scene, and a forensic team was called for scientific investigation. The injured criminal is currently undergoing treatment at MGM Hospital amidst heavy police deployment. The Jamshedpur Police are now digging into the criminal history of the accused and conducting intensive patrols in sensitive areas to bust the entire gang network.
