Jamshedpur,: National Award-winning playback singer Shilpa Rao on Wednesday said that true success in the music industry doesn’t come from working on just a couple of projects, but requires consistent hard work and dedication every single day.
The 41-year-old singer, who was in her hometown — the steel city of Jamshedpur — attended a felicitation event organized by a local media house to celebrate her recent achievement.
Shilpa Rao was recently honoured with the prestigious National Award for her soulful rendition of the chart-topping song “Chaleya” from the 2023 blockbuster Jawan. Expressing her gratitude, she credited her success to a strong support system, including her family, schools, friends, and the media, all of whom played a significant role in helping her fulfill her dream of becoming a singer.

“No song becomes a hit by controversy,” she remarked. “A hit song requires three things — it should be well-prepared, have meaningful lyrics, and be executed properly.” Speaking about Chaleya, she appreciated the collaborative effort of the entire team, including music directors Vishal-Shekhar, filmmaker Siddharth Anand, actors Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone, and Yash Raj Films. “They all did a wonderful job, and the song is dedicated to the audience. It has truly touched hearts,” she added.
On the topic of Artificial Intelligence in music, Shilpa said, “Technology isn’t bad. We can use AI to reduce repetitive labor and simplify production. However, it should not replace human creativity but rather support it for easier adaptation.”
When asked if she had any tips for aspiring local singers, Shilpa humbly replied, “I can’t tell you how to be a successful playback singer or how to sing for films. But I can certainly help a little if someone wants to become a good singer. Ultimately, it’s your own journey. You must pursue it with hard work, dedication, and continuous practice.”
Rao also emphasized the importance of knowing one’s vocal range. “I only accept a song if it suits my vocal range. If it’s in my range, I’ll definitely sing it,” she said.
Recalling her earlier hesitation to sing the popular track “Khuda Jaane” from Bachna Ae Haseeno, starring Ranbir Kapoor, she revealed that the song was challenging. “I was a bit hesitant, but Vishal-Shekhar, Siddharth Anand, and the team had faith in me — and I sang it because of their belief. It turned out to be a big hit,” she said with a smile.
