Tata Workers` Union completes 100 glorious years

~A conclave on “Tomorrow`s Union” organised to mark the centenary~

 Jamshedpur, : Tata Workers` Union (TWU) of Tata Steel completed its 100 glorious years on March 5, 2020. Host of events were organised in the last one year to commemorate 100 years of TWU.

As part of a closing function, a one and half day conclave on “Tomorrow`s Union” was organised on March 7-8, 2020 at the Michael John Auditorium in Jamshedpur.  The conclave was inaugurated by Mr T V Narendran, CEO and Managing Director, Tata Steel on March 7, 2020.

Addressing the gathering at the inauguration of the conclave, Mr Narendran said: “It is not easy for any Union to survive for 100 years and I congratulate TWU for completing 100 glorious years of its existence.” “Everything needs to be redefined for an institution which is 100 years old. How do we redefine and plan for the future is the responsibility both the Union and the Management. We need to work towards making a sustainable future for all of us,” he added.

Mr R Rabi Prasad, President TWU highlighted the importance of the conclave and the need for the workers to gear up for the future in view of advent of Industry 4.0.

The conclave saw deliberations on the themes, namely, Expectations from Tomorrow`s Union, Today’s Future is Tomorrow’s Today – Are Unions ready to transform? and Challenges for Tomorrow’s Union, where the participation was from CEOs, Chiefs of Human Resource Departments and Union leaders of Tata group companies and Tata Steel group companies. There were also business case presentations on the “Impact of Industry 4.0 on Tomorrow’s Union” by the B-School students. The best business case presentation by B-School was won by Xavier Institute of Management- Bhubaneshwar

Members of the CEO`s panel discussion included Mr Vishal Badshah, Plant Head Jamshedpur, Tata Motors, Mr Ashish Anupam, CEO Tata Steel Long Products and Mr C V Sastry, Managing Director of JCAPCPL, Mr Ashish Gupta, Managing Director of TMILL, The session was moderated by Mr Prakash Singh, Chief Capability Development, Tata Steel. The session emphasized the need of digitization and capability development of workers.

Dr Onkar Sharma, Deputy Chief Labour Commissioner (Central), New Delhi, who was present on the occasion as legal expert stated the need for reskilling and upskilling workers for continuous employability.

The CHRO`s (Chief Human Resource Officer`s) panel discussion was moderated by Mr Zubin Palia, Chief Group IR, Tata Steel. The panelist included Mr Ravi Singh, CHRO, Tata Motors, Mr Harbhajan Singh, Director – General & Corporate Affairs, Honda MSI Private Limited, Mr Nadeem Kazim, Founder CEO Splice HR Works and Mr Sandip Dhir, CHRO, Tata Steel BSL. The panelist talked about the steps to be taken for transformation of the Union.

The Union leaders like Mr Arvind Kumar Pandey, Deputy President TWU, Mr R K Singh, General Secretary, Tata Motors Union,Mr S L N Murthi, President Titan Employees Union,Mr S K Yadav, President, CEAT Tyre Union deliberated on the challenges for tomorrow`s union and the opportunities that lie ahead them. The Union`s session was moderated by Mr Shahnawaz Alam, Vice President TWU.

The concluding function of the conclave was held on March 8, 2020. In his address during the closing function, Mr Suresh Dutt Tripathi, Vice President, HRM, Tata Steel thanked the participants in making the conclave successful. He said: “I was happy to see the enthusiasm of the participants, especially, the young students and their thoughts on making the workforce ready for future challenges. This is a first step towards any change and I am sure that a strategy on whatever has been discussed in this conclave can be built for implementation.”
