Jamshedpur: Tata Steel Foundation, in collaboration with the Department of Technical Education & Industrial Training, Punjab, has implemented a focused skilling intervention to strengthen industry-aligned electrical training among youth in the state. As part of this initiative, Electrical Labs have been established at Government Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) at Gill Road and Samrala in Ludhiana, with equipment support from Schneider Electric. These labs are designed to enhance hands-on, practical learning and bridge the gap between classroom education and industry requirements.

ITI Gill Road Ludhiana; Charanjit Singh Vishvkarma, Chairman IMC, Govt. ITI Gill Road Ludhiana; and Baljinder Singh, Vice Principal, Govt. ITI Gill Road Ludhiana. The intervention adopts a holistic approach by integrating technical training with employability skills. It includes strengthening electrical lab infrastructure, enabling hands-on and experiential learning, and building institutional capacity through Training of Trainers. The technical curriculum covers areas such as house wiring and troubleshooting, pipe and batten wiring with drilling practice, solar water pumping systems, motor starter and controller operations, and hybrid solar systems with energy storage applications. Through this intervention, a total of 64 learners have benefited so far, including 44 at ITI Gill Road and 20 at ITI Samrala, with improved practical competencies and enhanced industry readiness.

In parallel, the employability skills programme in Ludhiana has reached 1,580 learners across both ITIs, including 964 at Gill Road and 616 at Samrala. The programme focuses on building essential workplace capabilities through modules on communication skills, basic English, digital literacy, career readiness, constitutional values, and future skills. These efforts are further complemented by support to Punjab Government initiatives such as Yudh Nashyan Virudh, Punjab Startup App, and Wadhwani Skilling, along with industrial visits that provide learners with exposure to real-world work environments and feedback-driven learning.

Speaking on the occasion, Sourav Roy, CEO, Tata Steel Foundation, said: “We are grateful to the Department of Technical Education & Industrial Training, Punjab, for their partnership and shared vision in strengthening the skilling ecosystem in the state. Tata Steel Foundation currently runs three ITIs in Jharkhand and one in Odisha, and through this collaboration, we are supporting two Government ITIs in Ludhiana with Schneider Electric-enabled electrical labs, along with dedicated trainers for soft skills. We are also delivering employability skills training in Ludhiana, ensuring that technical learning is complemented with workplace competencies. This initiative reflects our effort to bring in systems that channelise and augment the technical potential of youth, while building resilient institutions that can equip them with relevant skills and confidence. We hope to enable young people to meaningfully contribute to the region’s journey towards growth.”

This initiative underscores Tata Steel Foundation’s continued efforts to bridge the education-to-employment gap while contributing to the development of a skilled, confident, and future-ready youth population.
