Jamshedpur/Ranchi: In a massive boost for Jharkhand’s sports ecosystem, Ashish Tani Purti, a stellar cadet of the Naval Tata Hockey Academy (NTHA), has been officially selected to represent India at the upcoming Men’s Youth Hockey 5s Asia Championship in Muscat, Oman.
His selection has sparked widespread celebrations across the sports fraternity in Jamshedpur and Ranchi.
The Sole Representative from Jharkhand
This selection marks Ashish’s second major international tournament in the prestigious blue jersey. He previously delivered an exceptional performance during India’s historic gold medal triumph at the U-18 Asia Cup in Kakamigahara, Japan. Notably, Ashish stands out as the only player from the entire state of Jharkhand to be selected for the boys’ squad for this high-stakes Gulf tour.

Earning the Spot Through a Rigorous National Camp
Ashish’s voyage to Muscat was earned through a grueling, high-intensity national preparatory camp held at Punjab University. The national selection committee faced a monumental task, pruning a highly competitive pool of 15 elite prospects down to a lean, hyper-focused 10-member squad.
Because the Hockey 5s format demands relentless speed and tactical agility, the coaching staff opted to carry only two specialized defenders to anchor the Indian backline. Ashish triumphantly claimed one of these two highly coveted defensive spots.

Ashish’s spectacular rise highlights the monumental impact of the Hockey Ace Foundation (HAF), a visionary joint initiative conceptualized by Tata Steel and Tata Trusts in 2017. Established to revitalize hockey at a high-performance level—mainly within the tribal belts of Jharkhand—the foundation operates NTHA Jamshedpur as a premier incubator for elite athletic talent.
