India’s para badminton sensation, Umesh Vikram Kumar, has officially been crowned World No. 1 in Men’s Singles, according to the latest BWF Para Badminton World Rankings released on September 2, 2025. This achievement marks a historic milestone in Kumar’s illustrious career and a significant moment for Indian para sports.
Kumar’s rise to the top has been nothing short of inspirational, with a remarkable series of performances throughout the 2025 season. His journey to the top ranking included a gold medal in Men’s Singles and a silver in Men’s Doubles at the Egypt Para Badminton Championship in January. He followed this up with a silver medal in Men’s Doubles at the Spanish Para Badminton Championship in March.
In May, Kumar secured silver medals in both singles and doubles at the Dubai Para Badminton Championship. His consistent form continued with bronze medals in both categories at the Bahrain Para Badminton Championship in June and a bronze in Men’s Singles at the Asian Para Badminton Championship in Korat.
Most recently, Kumar added a silver medal in Men’s Singles at the 4 Nations British & Irish Para Badminton International – Level 1 in July and a bronze in Men’s Singles at the Peru Para Badminton International in August. Beyond the 2025 season, Kumar has also made his mark on the world stage with two bronze medals in Men’s Doubles at the BWF Para Badminton World Championships.

He highlighted the excellent infrastructure provided by Tata Steel, including six indoor wooden courts equipped with professional-grade lighting and access to a comprehensive support system.
The Tata Steel Badminton Training Centre, where Kumar trains, offers a range of facilities, including strength and conditioning programs, physiotherapy services, recovery and rehabilitation support, and nutritional guidance. This support has been instrumental in Kumar’s development as a sportsperson.
