Noamundi: Tata Steel Noamundi celebrated a historic milestone today as it marked 100 years of its mining operations with a grand and memorable Centenary Year Celebration. The event brought together Tata Steel senior leadership, current and former employees, and union members to commemorate a century of pioneering mining excellence, technological progress, and community development.
The programme commenced with the screening of an audio-visual feature, “Reliving 100 Years: Saga of Noamundi”, capturing Noamundi’s transformation over the decades—from its early years to becoming one of India’s most advanced and sustainable mining operations.
Delivering the welcome address, Atul Bhatnagar, General Manager, Ore Mines & Quarries (GM, OMQ), highlighted Noamundi’s journey towards becoming a model mining site anchored in innovation, safety, sustainability, and people-first values. He acknowledged the pivotal role played by employees across generations in building Noamundi’s rich legacy.
A nostalgic segment titled “Pages from the Past” brought alive invaluable recollections from present and former leaders . D B Sundara Ramam, Vice President, Corporate Services, (VPCS) Tata Steel, who also served earlier as Vice President, Raw Materials, shared his experiences of working at Noamundi and reflected on defining milestones during his tenure. This was followed by anecdotes from past leaders A. M. Mishra and A. D. Baijal who revisited significant chapters of Noamundi’s mining journey and the people who shaped it.
A key highlight of the celebration was the release of the commemorative souvenir and the Coffee Table Book by T V Narendran, Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director, Tata Steel, Sandeep Kumar, Vice President, Raw Materials, Tata Steel, Vice President, Corporate Services and GM, OMQ. The Coffee Table Book, a visual and narrative chronicle of Noamundi’s 100-year journey, showcases archival images, historic milestones, and stories capturing the evolution of one of Tata Steel’s most iconic mining units. The joint release symbolised Tata Steel’s commitment to honouring its heritage while looking ahead to future aspirations.
This was followed by a session titled “Deep Roots, Diverse Stories: Mining Tales from Employees”, where employees shared personal stories of their experiences and learnings while working at Tata Steel Noamundi, reflecting the spirit, resilience, and culture that define the organisation.
Addressing the gathering, VPRM acknowledged the strong leadership foundation and the collective contributions of employees that have enabled Noamundi to emerge as an industry benchmark in mining excellence.

He shared that Noamundi has been instrumental in powering Tata Steel’s growth and has consistently set benchmarks in responsible mining, sustainability, and community engagement, making it a cornerstone of the company’s raw material operations.
