In a significant move towards empowering rural youth with digital skills, the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at NIT Jamshedpur has launched a week-long digital literacy workshop, scheduled from June 30 to July 4, 2025.
The initiative, aimed at bridging the digital divide, targets teenagers and youth from rural backgrounds, introducing them to basic computer skills, internet safety, digital communication, government e-services, and responsible use of social media.
The program was formally inaugurated by Prof. Gautam Sutradhar, Director of NIT Jamshedpur. In his address, Prof. Sutradhar emphasized,
“In today’s era, computer literacy is not just a technical skill but a pathway to self-reliance and future opportunities.”
Prof. Ram Vinoy Sharma, Deputy Director, highlighted how digital tools can simplify everyday life and bring transformational changes to rural communities.
Dean (R&C) Prof. Satish Kumar added,
“Digital literacy is the first step toward real empowerment. This workshop will boost the confidence of youth to compete and thrive in a tech-driven world.”
Prof. Alok Priyadarshi and Prof. Dilip Kumar are spearheading the coordination of the workshop. Notably, Prof. Priyadarshi undertook door-to-door outreach to educate villagers about the importance of digital knowledge, using local dialects and relatable examples to ensure grassroots understanding.
A team of dedicated PhD scholars — Ujra Rahman, Amit Bharti, Ranjan Kumar, Bijay Singh, Ashit Ekka, Sudhanshu Shekhar, and Chiranjeevi Kant — are handling logistics, registration, and on-ground coordination. Their enthusiastic involvement has been key to the event’s smooth functioning.
The workshop’s framework and quality assurance are being overseen by Dr. Shobhashankar Kumar Tiwari, Dr. Suchismita Mahato, Dr. Dilip Kumar, and Dr. Danish Ali Khan.
Speaking on the initiative, Media In-Charge Mr. Sunil Kumar Bhagat stated,
