Jamshedpur: Tata Steel today celebrated the 119th Birth Anniversary of Bharat Ratna JRD Tata by paying homage to the legend and organising a host of activities like sports, quizzes, aero modelling show, walkathon and other events for the community across all its operating locations.
Homage was paid to JRD Tata at Sonari airport in Jamshedpur and various other locations by the dignitaries and employees of Tata Steel and other Group companies.
The main attraction, Aero Modelling Show at Gopal Maidan, mesmerized the audiences who came in large number to celebrate the occasion. The show witnessed interactive displays and a splendid exhibition of remarkable model planes of various sizes and types ranging from nitro engines, turbine engines and electric engines. The teams from Jamshedpur and Kolkata were part of the show. There was static display of planes and other models while planes like Fun Cub, Slow Stick and twin electric were flown during the show.
In the morning, a Walkathon was also organised within the premises of JRD Tata Sports Complex which was open for the citizens of Jamshedpur. Altogether around 400 participated took part in the event which was graced by Asmita Dorjee (Everest Climber), Santosh Varghese (Former Indian Athletic Coach), Mukul Vinayak Choudhary, Chief Sports Tata Steel and Hemant Gupta, Head Sports Tata Steel. This year’s celebrations centers around JRD Tata and his dreams to build a digital India and how he was instrumental in laying the foundation for the birth of the digital era in the country. The main components were:
- Vision for a digital India – how JRD Tata pioneered the IT industry in India – JRD’s efforts with TCS were the first milestones for the country. TCS was the first IT Company of India. This IT industry became the backbone for what we know as the digital India today.
- Employee Welfare & Agility – JRD was among the first to realise that employees are among the most important resources in any organisation. Continuing this legacy, Tata Steel has adopted digital technologies to enhance safety and agility of its workforce.
- Future-ready workforce – JRD Tata was instrumental in creating a Personnel Department at Tata Steel. He was one of the pioneers on connecting the whole country by encouraging India’s developing infrastructure – underlying theme was to bring talent to work. Today, digital is enabling us to bring work to the talent, regardless of where they are in the country.
- Foresight to embrace digital – JRD’s vision of adopting computerisation at a time when there was a sentiment of fear of computers replacing humans. As we move into the new era of digitisation, Tata Steel is poised to be at the forefront of leveraging AI.
It was JRD’s vision, Tata Steel has consistently embraced state-of-the-art technology as an integral part of its corporate ethos, a feat made possible by the visionary leadership of JRD Tata, Today, the company remains at the forefront of the industry with its adoption of industry 4.0 technologies for efficient and interconnected operations and assets. Notably, Tata Steel has set a new standard for collaboration and productivity in the Indian steel industry with its remote operation and maintenance facilities, a first of its kind achievement.

Tata Steel Centre for Excellence also organised a Quiz for school students at Michael John Auditorium on July 28. The event brought together 200 talented students from 20 prominent English medium schools in the city of Jamshedpur. The questions covered aspects of life and times of JRD Tata, challenging the students to think critically and showcase their intellectual prowess. After a nail-biting competition, JUSCO School Kadma emerged winner, followed closely by J H Tarapore, Dhatkidih, who secured first runners-up position. The second runners-up position was claimed by Loyola School. The winners and the first runners-up were taken for a helicopter joyride around Jamshedpur in the Tata Steel helicopter today.
Tata Steel Foundation organised an Inter Centre Bodybuilding Championship at Baridih Community Centre on July 27 and an Inter Centre Football Tournament at Nandup Football Ground, Sundarnagar today. Around 300 players took part in both the events.
Tata Steel Sports Department organised Inter JDC Chess Tournament on July 27-28 at the JFC Media Centre, JRD Tata Sports Complex. The tournament witnessed enthusiastic participation of 39 teams from 24 Units of Tata Steel. More than 118 players showcased their talent. In a display of exceptional skill and sportsmanship, K K Jha from Sinter Plant emerged as the winner while Brajesh Sharma from Sinter Plant bagged the runner’s up position. Tilak Ram from Merchant Mill emerged as the 2nd runner’s up.
On July 27, Tata Steel Sports department also organised an athletics meet for transgender employees at JRD Tata Sports Complex to mark the occasion. Chief Guest of the event was Jaya S Panda, Chief Diversity Officer, Tata Steel.
Besides, article writing and photography contests was organised for the mediapersons by the Corporate Communications department, which received an overwhelming response.
JRD’s legacy continues to inspire millions of Indians and youth all over the world due to his unique leadership and down-to-earth management style. A pioneering aviator and a philanthropist, JRD was also the longest-serving Chairman of Tata Steel (1938-1984).
