Jamshedpur,: In line with Tata Steel’s environment and sustainability initiatives, Tata Steel today inaugurated a Rain Water Harvesting project at Nildih.
The project was inaugurated by Hon’ble MLA, Jamshedpur East, Mr Saryu Roy and Chanakya Chaudhary, Vice President, Corporate Services, Tata Steel in presence of Sanjeev Choudhary, President, Tata Workers’ Union, Tarun Daga, Managing Director Tata Steel Utilities & Services Private Limited Neeraj Kant, Managing director, ISWP and other officials of Tinplate, Tata Steel and local citizens.

The new rainwater harvesting pond has been created in Nildih within a short period of three months. The natural topography consisted of east to west sloping low lying land resulting into frequent water logging issues during the monsoons and due to overflowing natural drains. Utilizing these natural features, an appropriate design was given to the water body with architectural theme and aesthetic appeal, to act as a landmark Sustainability Project in Nildih area.

Tata Steel Ltd. has constructed this pond having surface area of about 1.5-acre which has water holding capacity of 18-Mn litres. The water body will help in rainwater harvesting and ground water recharge. The pond will also have two fountains and two imploders for aeration which will help in supporting aquatic life and further enhance the beauty of the area. About 350-mtr long walking track has been developed around this water body which is fenced by decorative MS grills as safety measure. Overall, 3.2 acres land has been converted into green cover by planting 6000 trees of different species.

The project will benefit the local community by creating a natural habitat for flora and fauna, and has resolved the pre-existing water logging issues which were reasons for vector borne diseases.

After completion of this project, Tata Steel has now created or rejuvenated surface water bodies in  a total of 45-acres and additional water holding capacity of 410-Mn litres across Jamshedpur over the last three years.
